Understanding by Design®
Understanding by Design (UbD®) is a curriculum framework developed by Jay McTighe and his co-author, Grant Wiggins. A central goal of UbD® is for students to transfer their knowledge and skills to situations outside the classroom. This means that learning should be applicable to real-life contexts, encouraging students to make connections and apply concepts creatively and critically.
The UbD® framework is based on a three-stage backward design process.
- In the first stage, educators think critically about their teaching and identify the desired results.
- Next they determine how students will be assessed in order to demonstrate real understanding and apply their learning.
- Finally, they design meaningful, student-centered learning experiences to achieve the desired results.
Ultimately, all three stages of a unit need to be aligned with both content standards and one another.

Eduplanet21’s Unit Planner was developed in conjunction with Jay McTighe to fully support the UbD® curriculum framework. The UbD® 2.0 template guides educators through each of the three stages (i.e., Identify Desired Results, Determine Assessment Evidence, Plan Learning Experiences) to create units. Unit Planner also provides educators with the ability to fully align each stage with the identified standards and learning goals (which are customizable in dropdown menus), run analysis reports for gaps and/or redundancies, and upload or link assessments, resources, and supporting documents.
Jay has developed an Understanding by Design® professional learning institute embedded in our platform to support its use.
